Steps for getting your lyrics displayed on as many services as possible

  1. The first step is posting lyrics on Musixmatch.com. Why? Once the lyrics meet the Musixmatch guidelines, it is relatively easy to adapt the text for Genius and LyricFind.

  2. The second step is the placement of lyrics on Genius. Lyrics that have been formatted for Musixmatch can easily be modified to the format used by Genius. There is some overlap between services powered by Musixmatch and Genius. Some services use Musixmatch as a primary source and Genius as a secondary source, and vice-versa. So it is important to have 100% correct lyrics on both platforms. That way you have more control of the quality of the displayed lyrics. (Just imagine that poorly transcribed lyrics supersede your version of the lyrics, because the other platform is designated as the primary source!)

  3. The third step is to send the lyrics to LyricFind. LyricFind has its own Lyric Formatting Guidelines. It is easiest to reuse the same lyric text that you formatted for MusixMatch or Genius, and then modify that text for submission to LyricFind. LyricFind is used by a number of services, including Deezer and Youtube Video.

DIY (Artists / Agents / Managers)

Do-It-Yourself, and we are there to guide you if and when needed

We believe that every artist should be in full control of the lyrics that are shown on major services. If you leave the control over to your fans or vendor content teams, someone else is deciding what is (in)correct... and their efforts will have an impact on the listening experience of your fans.

Musixmatch and Genius get most of their lyrics from fans that transcribe lyrics, and (thankfully) these services also offer artists the possibility to verify their profiles so that they can publish 'official lyrics' that will overrule any fan-based lyrics.

LyricFind takes a slightly different approach. LyricFind accepts lyrics from Publishers, Official Partners, and their own Content Team.

Note: Anyone can submit 'fan-based lyrics' to the LyricFind content team for review and processing. For Independent Artists this means, that unless you / your team / a fan is actively sending your song lyrics to the LyricFind Content Team, you will not see your lyrics on any service that exclusively takes input from LyricFind! (Please don't underestimate the market share of LyricFind!)Realize that this Content Team that can modify your 'fan-based submission' at their discretion. They listen to your song and will modify the transcript based on what they think you are singing/saying. Also, note that the Content Team has a limited number of resources... so it is nearly impossible to predict if and when your fan-based submitted lyrics will be processed! The only workaround is via a team that has access to the LyricFind system (more about this later on).

False sense of security

Some artists use the services of their distributor (if available) to publish the lyrics to Musixmatch, Genius, and/or LyricFind. But do you really know what you are getting?

Some distributors just 'dump' the lyrics, and do not include verification of the lyrics and time-syncing of the lyrics to the soundtrack. Please don't assume what your distributor is offering you. Spend time to fully understand what your distributor is actually doing for you. If they are just 'dumping' the lyric text, then don't waste any time/money with this 'additional service' and move on to a way of working that gives you better results.

Rule: If a targeted service offers the possibility to their users to see time-synced lyrics, then you need to provide synced lyrics to the service. (E.g. Spotify, videos used in Facebook / Instagram stories, etc.)

If your distributor is just dumping your lyric text, and not time-syncing the lyrics to the song, then you should have someone time-sync the lyrics a.s.a.p..

Step 1

The First Step (for all scenarios): Get registered

  • Verify yourself as an artist with Musixmatch. Go to: https://about.musixmatch.com/artists/verified-artist

  • Register for a verified account on Genius: https://genius.com/Genius-how-to-get-verified-on-genius-annotated

TIP: Always use an email address and (strong) password when creating an account on Musixmatch. Otherwise, you will not be able to delegate any tasks in Musixmatch to others. Authentication using Google, Apple ID, Facebook is personal and can't be shared with others. Also, Musixmatch accounts that use Google / Facebook / Apple authentication cannot be changed to email login, and vice versa. An account using an email address to log in gives you maximum flexibility.

Step 2

Familiarize yourself with the Lyric Formatting Guidelines of Musixmatch, Genius, and LyricFind. I recommend that you first master the Musixmatch guidelines. It is relatively easy to tweak lyrics that comply with the Musixmatch guidelines for re-use on Genius and LyricFind.

Please take this step seriously. If the formatting of your lyrics complies with the guidelines, then you reduce the chance that anyone will modify your submitted content.

Step 3

We have a dedicated support channel on Discord for our Ko-Fi membership tiers (see: https://discord.com/channels/971652863325536316/)
Access is managed through Ko-Fi memberships. If you don't see the 'support' or 'membership perks' channels on our Discord server, then check the status of your membership on
Ko-Fi.

Use our Discord channel to submit lyrics for peer review, seek advice, and ask for clarification on the guidelines. All communication is in English (mandatory).

Step 4

Open our Genius Formatting tool: https://nzwaneveld.github.io/lyricformatter/geniusformatter.html (you will need this in step 6)

Open the Artist Submission page on Musixmatch

Step 5

Submit your lyrics to Musixmatch. Don't forget to time-synchronize the lyrics to the music.

Step 6

Before you click on 'Send' in the Musixmatch edit screen, select the lyric text and drag this to the middle of our Genius Lyrics Formatting tool (see step 4). This tool does a number of things. It converts all of the stanza labels in Musixmatch format to labels used by Genius (and removes labels that are not used by Genius). It also fixes a number of important punctuation issues that are covered in the guidelines.

If you have already submitted the lyrics on Musixmatch, then go back into edit mode and select the lyrics.

The Genius Lyrics Formatting tool only starts to convert when you 'drag & drop' the lyrics into the tool.

Step 7

Go to your artist submission page on Genius, and create a new song. You can copy & paste the converted lyrics from the Genius Lyric Formatting tool into Genius.

Step 8

Submitting lyrics to LyricFind.

You have two options for LyricFind.

  1. (DIY) You send your lyrics as a fan-based submission to the LyricFind team via email (see our earlier comments on fan-based lyric submissions)

  2. (DIY with our lyrics submission tool) Join one of our contributor tiers on Ko-Fi and submit time-synced lyrics using our LyricFind submission form. This form allows you to add time-synced lyrics to the submission batch that we send out to LyricFind.

You will need to convert your time-synced lyrics in Musixmatch to the LRC format used by LyricFind. We have made a
tool to help you convert time-synced lyrics found on Musixmatch to the Simpel LRC format needed for LyricFind. The tool is free to use.

If you are not able or willing to convert the time-synced lyrics on Musixmatch yourself (DIY for free), then we can do it for you as a Paid Service. In that case, fill in the request form:
Convert time-synced lyrics from Musixmatch to LyricFind

    Please realize that there is
no room for errors when submitting lyrics to us in the format required by LyricFind. If the batches contain errors, they will not be processed by LyricFind. That is why we offer to coach you, so you are able to provide error-free details in the required format, each and every time. (Get support via our Discord server - access is included in our contributor tiers on Ko-Fi.)

How to submit lyrics to LyricFind via email as a fan-based submission:

In the instructions below, I use square brackets '[...]' to indicate variables that you need to fill in. For example, replace [song title] with the actual title of your song.

The two disadvantages of fan-based submissions via email are:

  • Delays caused by the queue, manual review & processing of email submissions

  • You cannot submit time-synced lyrics

Create and send an email:

Email address: [email protected]

Subject: Fans-based lyrics for [song title] - [artist name]

Message:

Please find below the lyrics for a song that I have released.

Title: [song title]

Artist: [artist name]

ISRC: [the ISRC for this song]

Lyrics:

[add the lyrics of this song]

Kind regards,

...

Don't know the ISRC code of the song?

1. Open your song on Spotify and copy the song link

2. Go to https://www.isrcfinder.com/
3. Paste the Spotify Song link in the designated search box and click on '
Find ISRC'

For the lyrics, reuse the converted text that you used for Genius. You will still need to make a few modifications! Check the LyricFind Formatting Guidelines on our site.
The most important parts of the guidelines are:

  • Remove all of the stanza labels.

  • Only one empty line between stanzas.

  • Exaggerations should be cut down to the original word or punctuation.

DIY (Non-Artists / Trainees / Hobby Lyric Curators)

Do-It-Yourself, and we are there to guide you if and when needed

Whether you are a manager, promoter, label, distributor, enthusiastic fan, or a lover of Christian music... We can show/coach you to become a contributor on Genius and a certified curator Musixmatch.

Genius

The journey to becoming a contributor on Genius is relatively easy.

  • Register yourself

  • Submit the lyrics for a couple of songs. You are a contributor once you reach 100+ points

The challenge is following the Genius guidelines. If you adhere to the Genius guidelines, any changes other contributors will make will be small improvements (for example, adding the name(s) of the artist singing that specific part of the lyrics).

If your lyrics already comply with the Musixmatch guidelines, you only need to make small changes (and we have a Genius Formatting Tool for that).

Musixmatch

We are absolutely not offering any kind of shortcuts or cheats to expedite your journey towards becoming a certified Musixmatch curator. Every candidate curator will need to put in all of the effort needed to follow online training, pass tests, gain experience (earning points), qualify as a certified curator, and stay qualified.

We can coach you and even help by pushing tasks to you to help you gain more experience.... Experience that brings you closer to becoming a curator.

The road to becoming a certified curator may sound like a long journey. There is no fixed rule... Some people manage to become a certified curator within a week (like Nico did), some need more time, and there are plenty of people that remain valued contributing members that need a curator to review and finalize their additions/changes.

Step 1

The First Step (for all scenarios): Get registered

  • Create an account on Musixmatch: https://www.musixmatch.com/sign-up

  • Create an account on Genius: https://genius.com/signup

TIP: Always use an email address and (strong) password when creating an account on Musixmatch. Musixmatch accounts that use Google / Facebook / Apple authentication cannot be changed to email login, and vice versa.

In my journey,
I first created an account using Google authentication. When I passed the curator test, the curator status was linked to my email address. I didn't realize that I now had two accounts! By the time I realized that I was working in two accounts, I had over 3000 points on my Google-authenticated account that could not be transferred into my email-based account (with the curator status). That caused an unpleasant delay in my journey to earn a higher ranking on Musixmatch.
Why is this important? Lower-ranking curators cannot change the submission of higher-ranking curators. In essence, I get most of my lyrics from the artists themselves. I don't want anyone else to modify lyrics that I know are correct, based on their misunderstanding of what the artist is singing or lack of knowledge about the use of capitals when making a reference to God.

Step 3

During your journey to reach the Curator status on Musixmatch, you need other curators on Musixmatch to approve your submitted lyrics. Musixmatch has a support channel on Slack where contributors can request verifications, BUT ... not every curator on that channel understands the terminology and the use of capitals that is common in Christianity. That is one of the reasons that we have our own support channel on Discord. We can help if your song lyrics are in English or Dutch.

How to access our support channel on Discord:

Curator trainees: We grant curator trainees working on Christian music free access to the support channel on our Discord server.
A curator trainee is someone who is learning how to curate lyrics on Musixmatch, has the intention of reaching the curator status on Musixmatch, and is developing these skills as an unpaid hobby. Obviously, all support queries on our channel must be related to Christian Music. If you believe that you qualify as a curator trainee, then let's talk. (=> Contact Us)

Paid membership: Everyone with Christian Music related queries can join and get access to the dedicated support channel on Discord by subscribing to one of our Ko-Fi membership tiers (see: https://discord.com/channels/971652863325536316/)
Access is managed through Ko-Fi memberships. If you don't see the 'support' or 'membership perks' channels on our Discord server, then check the status of your membership on
Ko-Fi.

Use our support channel to submit lyrics for peer review, seek advice, and ask for clarification on the guidelines.

I recommend using a PC / Laptop instead of the app on your phone.

Respect the etiquette... Only use the tools to convert lyrics that you have personally transcribed on Musixmatch. Lyric curators are often part of a community of volunteers. This community gets quite upset when they see that your contributions are a copy of lyrics published by other lyric curators, and you are reusing them on other services for personal 'status' gain. Violating the etiquette can result in warnings and/or banning.
So, just be aware of how you use the tools that we provide and avoid the temptation of crossing that thin line...

Step 7

Go to your artist submission page on Genius, and create a new song. You can copy & paste the converted lyrics from the Genius Lyric Formatting tool into Genius.

Step 8

Submitting lyrics to LyricFind.

You have two options for LyricFind.

  1. You send your lyrics as a fan-based submission to the LyricFind team via email (see our earlier comments on fan-based lyric submissions)

  2. If you are a trainee / volunteer / partner with us we can give you access to our LyricFind submission form (contact Nico and ask for access).

    Please realize that there is
no room for errors in this part of the submission process, because batches containing errors will not be processed by LyricFind. That is why we offer to coach you, so you are able to provide error-free details in the required format, each and every time. (Contact Nico to discuss the possibilities of getting a trainee / volunteer / partner status)

How to submit lyrics to LyricFind via email as a fan-based submission:

In the instructions below I use brackets [ ] to indicate variables that you need to fill in. For example, replace [song title] with the actual title of your song.

Steps for option 2:

Post a message in the relevant channel with the following details:

  • ISRC of the song

  • Title of the song

  • Artist name

  • Duration of the song (mm:ss)

  • Link on Musixmatch to the song

Steps for option 3 (paid):

Once you have your lyrics on Musixmatch, you can fill in a request to convert lyrics from Musixmatch to LyricFind. Our team will convert the lyrics you submitted to Musixmatch and submit them to LyricFind (direct access to the LyricFind Servers).
