"God of Every Moment" by Victor Cross: Finding Freedom After Surrender


Surrender isn’t loss. It’s freedom. 

Five weeks. That’s how long it took for a voice memo on a phone to become a debut worship single. Victor Cross wrote “God of Every Moment” after heart surgery reshaped the way he saw his days — not in the sense of trying to control them, but as surrendering to God’s timing, even when it doesn’t make sense. 

Victor Cross - God of Every MomentVictor didn’t plan the “oh, oh, oh’s” that open the chorus. They arrived first, and the rest of the song followed. Something about that moment felt different from every other song he’d written. He calls it the first time writing led him straight into worship. 

The lyrics trace that shift plainly: “I’ve finally let go / Of the things that had a strong hold.” What was gripping you so tightly that letting go felt impossible? For Victor, it was the need to understand every outcome before he could trust it. His surgery stripped that away. Victor shares: “It was a surprise, but I knew God had me in every moment.” What remained after the surgery was a “wide open space” with no end in sight — not empty, but free.

Psalm 31:15 highlights a small part of David’s prayer, a prayer for deliverance from his enemies, and in which he expresses how he trusts God with the outcome of his circumstances. This specific verse (v. 15) is very relevant to this song: “My times are in your hand.” Not some of your times. Not the ones that make sense. All of them — the surgery, the waiting room, the every ordinary day. Your calendar might be full of plans you can’t finish and outcomes you can't predict. The key is to let go of the illusion that you were ever holding the pen. God holds the pen, and your times are in His hand. 

Try this today: name one thing you’re gripping too tightly, and hand it over to God before lunch. Then give this song a listen and let the chorus remind you who’s actually keeping time. “You’re God in this very moment.”

“God of Every Moment” is live. Five weeks ago this was a voice memo on my phone. Today it’s my debut worship single — a song about surrendering to God’s timing, even when it doesn’t make sense.

It’s the first song that I released officially after having heart surgery two years ago. It was a surprise, but I knew God had me in every moment, but I felt something beyond writing songs I felt as if this is what I am to do with every moment until I go to be with the Lord. That’s it in a nutshell as I was writing this song as soon as I heard the Oh, oh, oh’s, the rest fell into place. I have written many, many songs, but I believe that was the first time while writing a song the Lord led me into worship.
