"Breakthrough Into Overflow" by Richard McKnight: When Your Jar Refuses to Run Dry

Is your jar already open, waiting to be filled?

Richard McKnight wrote “Breakthrough Into Overflow” in response to his church’s theme for the year. It resonated with him because he’s not wealthy by the world’s measuring stick. No mansion, no stock portfolio bragging rights. But count the gifts that God gave him, the family around him, the friends who show up — and when he thinks about his journey and where he came from, he realizes that he’s rich beyond what any bank account could show. Look back at where you started. Look at where you stand today. That gap? God filled it. Not with a single moment of breakthrough, but with overflow that kept coming.

Richard McKnight - Breakthrough Into OverflowThe lyrics reflect this with Old Testament color: “The jar is open, and the oil keeps flowing.” That image comes straight from the widow at Zarephath, who had nothing left but a handful of flour and a small amount of oil — until God made sure neither of them ran dry.

Her story sits right next to ours. 2 Kings 4:6 says it clearly: “When all the jars were full, she said to her son, “Bring me another one.” But he replied, “There is not a jar left.” Then the oil stopped flowing.” Read it again… The oil stopped only when the jars ran out, not before. God’s supply wasn’t the limit. The number of jars she had was the limit.

What jars are you holding too tightly closed? Maybe it’s a dream you shelved, a relationship you’re rationing hope for, or a (spiritual) gift you’ve been told isn’t good enough to use yet. Open those jars. Stop measuring God’s provision by what you currently see in your hands. Jesus fed five thousand from five loaves. He multiplied a widow’s last drops into enough to pay every debt she owed.

You don’t need more proof before you trust Him. You need to open more jars. Give this song a listen today. Let the lyrics remind you that breakthrough isn’t the destination — it’s the doorway to more. “I’m moving from breakthrough into overflow.”

(Related scripture: 2 Kings 4:6; Matthew 14:20; John 10:10)

Background:

The song Breakthrough Into Overflow is actually the theme for our church this year. This resonated with me because while I may not be a millionaire or rich by the standards of this world, my heavenly Father has made me rich with the gifts he's blessed me with, with family and friends. When I think about my journey and where I came from to where I am now, it's nothing but God moving me from breakthrough into His Overflow.

'Lonely Dirt Road' by Dax: A Journey to Solitude and God

Dax's 'Lonely Dirt Road' is a conversation that Dax has with himself and God. Dax shares his journey of turning mental health walks into healing solitary drives. As you listen, you can almost feel the cruise, where it's just you, your thoughts, and God.  The chorus is so relatable: 'When I need space, that's where I go, a place to escape that nobody knows.' What do you do when life's pressures stack high? Do you also have a space where you can let go? That lonely dirt road that Dax sings about symbolizes solitude, but it is also an incredible opportunity for connecting with God.  Dax's honesty is raw and relatable. 'I didn't want my family to see me cry… dealing with the pressure of trying to provide.' There are times when we all put on a smile to hide how challenging situations may be. Like his father, Dax says that he finds peace on this lonely road, where challenges become opportunities to grow. This shows the core of our faith: that...
