Why does God stay patient when we keep facing the same struggles
Confession can feel exhausting when we keep on struggling with the same challenge. “Same God” by Ezra Worship Initiative names that exhaustion: “It’s the same prayer, over and over again.” The song doesn’t pretend that these struggles are new. It points out a key part of our human nature — “Lord, I’ve fallen again” — not as an excuse, but as a step toward hope instead of shame. The lyrics admit, “I do the things that I do not want to do,” echoing the struggle that every honest believer knows. The flesh pulls us one way, while the Spirit pulls us in a different direction. The song’s focus isn’t on the failure. Its focus is on the constant in our lives: “You’re the same God, Your kindness knows no end.”
The apostle Paul wrote about this “tug-of-war” in Romans 7:24–25: “Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!” Did you notice what he doesn’t do? He doesn’t stay stuck in the question. He answers it.
So what can you do with a sin that keeps on resurfacing? To start with, don’t measure God’s patience by the progress you’re making. God’s character doesn’t change because of your performance, and that insight should change how you pray. Remember the classic proverb that encourages persistence? “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again!” That also applies to our relationship with God. Bring the same confession back tomorrow if you need to. His mercy isn’t a one-time gift that you already used up — His mercy “overflows,” fresh, every single time you return. “Your mercy overflows // You’re the same God // You’ll never let me go.”
May this song meet you in whatever loop that you’re stuck in today and remind you that “You’ll never let me, never let me go.”
