"Nothing But the Name (Live)" by Justin Barnett: The power of His name

(by Jasper Tan) Justin Barnett with NCS Collective's live recording of their song "Nothing But the Name" is a powerful intimate worship performance that reminds us that only Jesus Christ matters. Justin's soulful and grounded vocal presence brings a sincere voice that enjoins us to sing the song with him and give worship to Jesus. Justin's vocals brings a certain grittiness to it as well as tenderness, which is evident during the opening verses where he reflects on Jesus as the "bread of life". This deeply emotional performance rises to its peak during the choruses where he is joined by the NCS Collective. This is where we get our full experience of a communal praise and worship session. The accompaniment of a full band setup and a group of backing vocals enhances that feel as we are reminded that to bring praise and worship to God is always more powerful when done as a community.

Justin Barnett - Nothing But the Name (Live)The song is anchored by Barnett's acoustic guitar, which provides a steady rhythmic foundation. While the keyboards and electric guitars offer atmospheric layers which builds the wholeness of the song as it progresses. The lyrics remind us on the sufficiency and power of the name of Jesus, utilizing a tapestry of biblical metaphors such as references to the "Bread of Life" and "Living Water", and descriptions of Christ as the "Cornerstone" and the "Lion". But the central hook of the song remains on the line "Nothing but the name of Jesus," which serves as a meditative focal point throughout the song.

"Nothing But The Name" is a beautiful modern communal worship. It allows the raw talent of the musicians and the spiritual weight of the lyrics to take center stage. If you like listening to worship songs by Hillsong or by Maverick City Worship, then "Nothing But the Name" is a refreshing alternative of a worship song that needs to be heard now.

Background:

Justin shared the following:

This song we kind of had been sitting for a handful of years. We didn't really have a home for it. We kind of wrote it just because we had the heart for writing a song anybody could sing, but I didn't have a project going. Me (Justin) or Bryant didn't have projects going. So we had showed it to John, and he started putting this project together and he was like, "Man, we love this song. We believe in it. Let's let's do something with it." So that was pretty cool. I feel like it found a home and a place where people can get to it and hopefully be blessed by it.

'Lonely Dirt Road' by Dax: A Journey to Solitude and God

Dax's 'Lonely Dirt Road' is a conversation that Dax has with himself and God. Dax shares his journey of turning mental health walks into healing solitary drives. As you listen, you can almost feel the cruise, where it's just you, your thoughts, and God.  The chorus is so relatable: 'When I need space, that's where I go, a place to escape that nobody knows.' What do you do when life's pressures stack high? Do you also have a space where you can let go? That lonely dirt road that Dax sings about symbolizes solitude, but it is also an incredible opportunity for connecting with God.  Dax's honesty is raw and relatable. 'I didn't want my family to see me cry… dealing with the pressure of trying to provide.' There are times when we all put on a smile to hide how challenging situations may be. Like his father, Dax says that he finds peace on this lonely road, where challenges become opportunities to grow. This shows the core of our faith: that...

Ryan Stevenson - Carry Me (CCM)

Ryan Stevenson’s song ‘Carry Me’ is a powerful and emotive plea for help and guidance, and a reminder of the transformative power of faith. The lyrics are deeply personal and relatable, touching on themes of weariness, loneliness, and uncertainty. The song is a testament to the power of prayer and the strength we can find when we surrender our burdens to God. Stevenson’s own story of finding his way to a deeper understanding of grace and God’s love gives the song even more resonance. The honesty and vulnerability with which he shares his struggles and doubts will resonate with anyone who has faced similar challenges in their own life. The music itself is a beautiful and stirring blend of keyboard, guitar, and electronic elements, creating a haunting and atmospheric sound that perfectly complements the lyrics. The chorus is particularly powerful, with Stevenson’s voice rising to a crescendo as he cries out for help and support. If you’re feeling lost or overwhelmed, or simply need a rem...
