What do you do when fear feels bigger?
Loneliness has a way of making darkness feel even darker. “Why Would I Fear?” by Die Taube was written during a season that was marked by loss of community, loneliness, uncertainty, and difficult personal circumstances. Psalm 91 and 23 became an anchor in the middle of that season, a reminder that God stays close when everything else falls away.
The song opens with: “My heart, my mind, my soul has a sacred place where I go, ’cause I know Your help is a prayer away”. Instead of drowning in worry, the singer asks, “So why would I fear? Out of Your love You run to me.” That question isn’t rhetorical fluff. It’s a reminder that God’s protection is just a prayer away.
Psalm 91:4–5 (ESV) says that, “He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.” Notice the specifics. Not vague comfort — actual protection, named against actual danger. Your fears also have names, don’t they? Job loss. A diagnosis. Medical bills. A relationship falling apart. Families falling apart over polarized (political) views. Whatever it is, bring it into His light! God doesn’t ask you to pretend that the battle isn’t real. The battle is very real, with real people being hurt in ways that rarely meet the eye.
The bridge of the song quotes verse 7, about the thousands that are falling around you, but it will not come near you. We are encouraged to fix our eyes on God. Try this today: name one of your fears out loud, then read Psalm 91 over it like a promise instead of a poem.
Give “Why Would I Fear?” a listen, and let it remind you of the truth that easily drowns in the noise around us. May it also remind you that you too can be a blessing / a light to people who are falling around you. “My God my God You never fail.”

Background:
“Why Would I Fear?” was written during a season marked by loss of community, loneliness, uncertainty, and difficult personal circumstances. In the middle of it, Psalm 91 and Psalm 23 became anchors—reminders of God’s protection, presence, and faithfulness even in the darkest valleys.
The song is about responding to fear with a bold declaration: even when life feels uncertain and the battle is real, I can still trust that God is with me. With promises like these, why would I fear?
