What if God is the treasure you’ve been searching for?
Red Letter Society’s Psalms Project turns Psalms into modern-day songs. “Inheritance (Psalm 16)” is the latest release, a song that celebrates the joy, security, and eternal hope found in God as our greatest treasure.
The song opens with a prayer for shelter: “Preserve me, O God, in You I hide.” Then comes the bold part. “I have no good apart from You.” Could you say that and really mean it?
Most of us chase the smaller prizes in life. A promotion. A calmer calendar. A little more security. None of them is bad, and they can feel like big prizes in the moment. But none of them can carry the weight we put on them.
David knew that. In Psalm 16:6 he wrote, “The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.” The lyrics of this song echo David’s message: “Your boundaries fall on pleasant ground.” Those boundaries aren’t fences. They are the shape of a good life, drawn by a Father who knows the land and what is good for you.
David’s praises peak in verse 11: “You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” Notice what David says about who is making this known. Bottom line: You don’t have to map your path on your own!
So, how do you apply this today? Start by naming one thing that you are gripping the hardest. The second part may be the hardest part… Open your hand and accept what God does with it. Change the way that you start your mornings. Set His face before your own, first thing in the morning, before you open your phone or watch/read the news. The true joy that comes from His presence cannot be taken by a bad quarter or a hard week. He holds you, and you are free to enjoy His gift.
Give “Inheritance (Psalm 16)” a listen, and let the chorus say it back to you. Sing it in the car. Sing it in your home. “You make known the path of life. You’re my joy and my prize.”
