Have you ever felt God nudging you toward something more, possibly something way outside of your comfort zone? For Mikey Adebayo, that divine nudge during a ministry trip to his hometown (Birmingham) to minister at a church event also led to this song, "I Must Go (The Apostolic Song)."
Inspired by Acts 1:8, Mikey wrote this song as a prayerful response to God's call. It's not the kind of response that is asking you to listen… It's the kind of response that invites you to move and go where God sends you. That entire weekend, Mikey began to mull over the words "I must go, I must follow, I must serve my Lord, where he leads, Oh I will follow Him to the greatest ends of the earth."
It's easy to have an opinion when someone else receives such a calling, but what do you do when God is calling you? What will our response be? Will it be: "Lord, I will follow you // To the greatest ends of the earth"?
As I ponder on the words of the chorus, I shamefully admit that I added conditions after these lines: "You have rescued my life // I have seen your light // Where you lead // Lord, I will follow you…" and in my heart I added "but please Lord, not to the uttermost parts of the earth!" Then I remembered how the gifts of the Spirit work.
So what is the takeaway here? God knows us better than we know ourselves. Am I prepared to follow where He leads me? Unconditionally! The core message isn't about being called to a place; it is about being called to a posture. A posture of surrender. A posture of readiness, readiness to serve how and where God wants me. It's about putting the gifts of the Spirit that God has blessed us with into action, right where God wants them.
The beauty is that our journey of obedience is never one that we take alone. Part of our journey is asking ourselves if we are ready to embrace our purpose… God's purpose with us, a purpose for which He prepared a way? May this song be the prayer that sends you out to find your "uttermost parts of the earth," what or wherever that may be, and then take that next step in faith. You were made for more than comfort. You were made to go. Listen to His call. Then go.
