Michael Boggs - Have Mercy (CCM)

Michael Boggs - Have Mercy
Michael Boggs has released his first solo offering in seven years, “Have Mercy.” The song is a confession that brims with honest self-reflection and sincere repentance.

“There’s not a ton of songs in the worship world that are corporate confessions. We sing a lot about three categories: the glory of God, the gravity of sin and the grandeur of grace. That’s needed and healthy, but we don’t sing a lot of confession songs,” Boggs offers, “and so we just thought, ‘what would it sound like if we were to confess our own shortcomings and misgivings?’”

“Have Mercy” does just that, with listeners seemingly eavesdropping on a private prayer. While he realizes confession often has a negative connotation attached to it, Boggs concedes that confession is a bridge to the Father.

“It’s the one thing that restores communion with God, so why would we be afraid of something that brings God closer, not further away?” he insists. “Although it’s sometimes brutal to look in the mirror of your own confession, the Lord isn’t afraid of it. So hopefully this song invites people to come a little bit closer to the Lord through confession.”

Lyrics:

I need Your mercy
Lord give me Your mercy
for the times when my heart didn't break
when I casually asked for Your grace
when I desperately want my way more than Yours
Lord have mercy, have mercy on me

I need Your mercy
God grant me Your mercy
for the envy that's hidden inside
baptized in excuses and lies
for my cynical soul brings darkness to light
Lord have mercy, have mercy on me

I'm sorry Lord I'm sorry
so this is my confession
oh forgive me Lord forgive me
won't You pardon my transgression
cause I need Your mercy
Lord pour out Your mercy
for the moments where I have been blind
to drunk on my privilege and pride
for unholy justice I choose not to see
Lord have mercy, have mercy on me

I'm sorry Lord I'm sorry
so this is my confession
oh forgive me Lord forgive me
won't You pardon my transgression
cause I need Your mercy
Lord grant me Your mercy
oh when my greatest treasure is me
when I make Your grace cheap, not free
when I say all these words and don't mean what I say
Lord have mercy
have mercy on me
have mercy on me
have mercy on me
have mercy on me
