Can a grave really turn into a doorway?
Jonathan Duff wrote “Life Was Changed” while stepping outside the mainstream worship world he knew, desiring to keep the messaging simple and hopeful. He wanted a summer road-trip song, acoustic guitar and mandolin, that could play in a coffee shop and still carry the Gospel straight into someone’s heart. No heavy theology. Just the truth.
He wrote a song around Lazarus. Four days dead, wrapped in grave clothes, written off by everyone who loved him. Then Jesus shows up and says one thing: “Come out.” That’s the whole story. Duff sings it as his own testimony: “I was dead and buried, ’til You rolled that stone from my grave.” Sound familiar? Maybe not literally. But spiritually, most of us know what it feels like to be stuck in a tomb of our own making. Johnathan shares: “God called me out of the death I was walking in, into the life of abundance with Him.”
Here’s the scripture behind it. John 11:43 says Jesus “cried out with a loud voice, ‘Lazarus, come out.’” One command. No negotiation, no ten-step action plan. Death didn’t have a vote in the matter.
How can you apply this in your life today? It means that whatever feels buried inside you right now isn’t beyond His voice. The shame that you may have carried for years. A relationship that you gave up on. A version of yourself that you thought was gone for good. Jesus doesn’t ask you to fix it first. He just calls you to come out. So, stop negotiating with your grave clothes. Let go of them.
Listen to “Life Was Changed.” May the summer road-trip vibe and the warmth of the message remind you that grace showed up before you ever asked for it. As Jonathan sings: “Yes, I’ve been redeemed by Your grace.”

Background:
“Life Was Changed” is a direct self-reflecting comparison of the revival of Lazarus to my spiritual walk. Taking one of my first steps outside of mainstream worship, I wanted to keep the messaging simple and hopeful. God called me out of the death I was walking in, into the life of abundance with Him.
My hope in writing this song was to simplify the Gospel message in such a way that if it were played at a coffee shop or public space, the message could permeate people’s hearts and minds without being painfully on the nose.
I also fully believe that we need more beach/summer vibe music that glorifies the Lord.
