(by Jasper Tan) In the tradition of our favorite CCM rock anthems from the 90's and early 2000's (the Jars of Clay and Vertical Horizon come to mind), Robert Peterson and The Crusade's recently released single, called "Sometime," is a joyful experience to listen to. This is a rock song that speaks about waiting and being prepared for the right moment to be called by Jesus. It comes from a place where the miracle and the sudden arrival of God in our lives are always unpredictable. But when we are ready, God will find us. The lyricism of the song is written in such a way that there are double meanings and vague messages. I understand the artistic decision to write this in such a manner. I always believe that evangelism isn't always straightforward, and there is definitely not a one-size-fits-all approach. Sometimes people who have yet to encounter Jesus in their lives may feel resistance and apathy towards the truth of Jesus' love for us, but are open to messages shared through music.
When you already have Jesus in your heart, you'll recognize that this song is unmistakably talking about Jesus. The song is about waiting for that perfect time to come for Jesus to appear and affect our lives. We can't force ourselves to accept Jesus. Doing so will just be a hollow understanding of his love. Evangelism works, not because we are good preachers or we are good at shepherding people towards Jesus, but it is always about Jesus working His way towards the hearts that He seeks to touch. As the song says, "Sometime - you're gonna call my name, Sometime - you're gonna wish that you had known me….. And when you're all alone and finally cry out to me, You'll be ready, I'll be on the way." No, evangelism is never about us. We can't push it down the throats of our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. It should always come from God and be worked through the Holy Spirit. That way, those who are evangelized in His name will have a better appreciation of building a relationship with Jesus.
