Who do you run to when your foundation shakes?
(by Jasper Tan) “O Rock of Ages” by Hope Worship (feat. Jacob Her & Perry Ross) is a moving contemporary worship anthem that is a soul-stirring and spiritually moving song that depicts God as our “Rock" — an immovable and enduring source of our hope and strength. The song envelops us with such an intimate yet communal experience that it builds intimate lyrics and personal verses to a soaring, declarative song that will surely touch our souls.
One listen, and you’ll know that the music was carefully written to mirror the lyrical theme, with a vocal performance that sounds sincere and emotive. The song reminds us of several biblical truths that define God’s true nature. E.g., “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is his faithfulness.” — Lamentations 3:22–23
The opening lyrics (0:18) describe God as a “fountain I drink from” and “the well that never runs dry.” This depicts God as the Sustainer, someone who can offer spiritual refreshment when we are experiencing exhaustion in our lives and faith. The recurring refrain, “O Rock of Ages, my firm foundation” (0:42), emphasizes the reliability of God, which is further reinforced by the lyric, “You never change, great is Your faithfulness” (0:48), affirming God as our only source of stability when we are rocked by life’s challenges.
Our God is a “refuge I run to” and “my hiding place through the night” (1:14). He is our shield and protector. “Morning by morning, new mercies I see” (2:36) (which draws from Lamentations 3:22–23) guarantees us that God’s constant strength is something that we can draw from. That his daily provision, grace, and faithfulness are renewed every single day.
If you are looking for a worship song that would help you be reminded of God’s faithfulness and stability, then “O Rock of Ages” is a song that is highly recommended. For it is an accessible song for both seasoned believers and those who are new to the Christian faith. “Morning by morning, new mercies I see.”
