"Homesick!" by Paul Scala: Running Back to Your Strong Tower


What does it mean to feel “homesick” for God? 

Adam stood in the garden and felt something he’d never felt before. Shame. One bite from the forbidden fruit, and the closeness he shared with God vanished behind a door guarded by angels. He couldn’t go back. That’s how the song “Homesick!” by Paul Scala opens — not with condemnation, but with honesty. “I let that liar separate me from God who said don’t eat that tree.” Sound familiar? We’ve all stood in Adam’s place at some point, tricked into believing the lie, then buried under the weight of what we had done.

We may toward God instead of away from Him, singing, “Your grace gives me power, till this race is done, I’ll run to my Strong Tower.” That’s the shift we all need to make. Regret can either freeze you or send you running toward the One who already dealt with your penalty. 

Psalm 34:18 says, “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” He is near, not distant, not disappointed, not waiting for you to clean yourself up first. God moves toward broken people. When guilt tries to convince you that you’re too far gone, remember that Christ’s blood already bridged that gap. You don’t have to fix yourself before you come home — you just have to come. 

So what will you do with today’s shame? Will you let it isolate you from God, or will you let it drive you straight into His grace? Take one step toward God right now. Bring Him the thing you’ve been hiding. He’s already standing there, waiting for you, with open arms. 

May this song remind you where your real strength comes from — “Lord I’m feeling homesick.”

Background:

The song starts from the perspective of Adam who just realized what he had done by taking the fruit from the tree that God forbid Eve and him to eat from. We experience the shame he felt, that he allowed himself to be tricked by the enemy, leading to separation from God. Then later in the song the perspective shifts to us, when we realize our own sin and shame. However, through the shame and regret, we see the heart of a loving God, who gives us hope, who strengthens us in our weakest times and longs for relationship with us. He loves us so much that he is always standing with open arms calling us home to him!
