"Arrows (Psalm 127)" by Matt Rees: Raising Children With God


Children aren’t a burden — they’re a gift.

“Arrows (Psalm 127)” by Matt Rees is a simple family-centered message about trusting God to guide you as you build your home. Matt picked up an acoustic guitar and let Psalm 127 speak for itself — warm, simple, family-centered. No embellishment needed. The words carry their own weight.
“Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord,” the song opens. “The fruit of the womb is a reward.” This line (quoting Psalm 127:3) points out that children are a “gift/reward from God,” and shouldn’t be confused with “wages you’ve earned” or “proof of divine favor you possess.” This scripture isn’t making a claim about the worth, status, or blessedness of people who don’t have children. Those are two different statements, and a lot of painful misreading happens when the second gets smuggled in under the first.

Psalm 127:4 compares children to “arrows in the hand of a warrior” — pointed, purposeful, aimed at a future you won’t fully see. That’s an interesting image. An arrow only works when someone else releases it.

Then the song goes back to verse 1. “Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it.” Think about that for a moment. How much of your striving happens because you think it all depends on you? Matt continues with the message of verse 2, singing about rising early, staying up late, eating “the bread of sorrows” — exhausting yourself for outcomes that only God can secure.

The message in the first two verses of Psalm 127 can be summarized in the following manner: unless the Lord builds it, guards it, sustains it, your effort burns out. “For so He gives His beloved sleep.” That’s not about laziness, it’s all about trust. Your job isn’t to control every outcome for every member of your family — it’s to show up, ask God to lead, do your part, and trust that God will handle whatever is beyond your reach. Sure, that may be easier said than done, and it’s an area where we can grow. 

So, try this today: name one thing you’re gripping too tightly, thinking that it’s up to you. Hand it back to God and let Him guide you. Watch what changes when you stop laboring in vain and start resting in who’s actually building the house. “Unless the Lord builds the house // They labor in vain who build it”
