Something special happens when old stories are renewed and placed into present-day context. That is what Kayla Spurlock and The Fold Worship Choir do with the song "If I Can't." The song goes back to the story of the woman who reached out to touch the robe of Jesus in the midst of her desperation. She had suffered twelve years of pain, had found no solutions, and her hope was rapidly fading. Can you imagine her feelings of weariness and longing for a way out? Now bring those feelings to the here and now. Are these types of feelings also familiar to you? Kayla doesn't shy away from struggle, instead, she places it in the center of her song. "She hoped of healing, hid on the ground // In twelve years she'd never found," so real and relatable.
It doesn't have to be only about physical healing. It could be the heartbreak of children that have gone astray or are making poor choices in life or partners that have decided that it is easier to cause pain instead of making a change. There are so many types of situations that we could be facing, but the common theme is surrender. It's about the moments when we say, "I've been fighting, too… Mistakes I can't undo," and realizing that we're not alone. And when strength is running out, that there is still a safe place to be, "If I can't crawl // I'll fall to my Savior's arms." This is at the core of our faith, and a truth that we often tend to forget… So, we can't be reminded often enough that sometimes faith may look like falling, but in reality, He is already there to catch us.
Kayla invites you to trust the same Christ who turned to that hurting woman and said, "Your faith has healed you." He's still calling, reaching out, and catching us. And even when we can't do anything else, He still can.
