"Heart of Flesh" by Gresha Schuilling: From Stone to Something Alive


Real feeling returns when love finally breaks through. 

Some walls don’t come down through force, but come down through presence. That’s the key message behind Gresha Schuilling’s song “Heart of Flesh.” The song is a picture of someone who built distance as protection, only to discover that this “safe” distance was actually a prison. “Resistance held me firmly, unaffected, unmoved.” Does this sound familiar? Maybe you’re also keeping people at arm’s length. Maybe His Love knocked on your door, and you found reasons not to answer.

Nobody can talk themselves into softness. Gresha writes about a moment of stillness where running stopped working: “Then You met me in the stillness, where I would not run.” That’s a special moment, one you can’t create on your own. That’s surrender meeting mercy. 

This mirrors exactly what God promised His people long ago. In Ezekiel 36:26 we read, “And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.” Notice who does the giving, the removing, the replacing. You don’t create a soft heart by sheer willpower. God performs the surgery. 

What does this mean for you? It means that the coldness you feel toward a relationship, a calling, or even toward God Himself isn’t a life sentence. Stop trying to force feeling something through effort alone. Invite stillness instead. Let Him near your most guarded places. Numbness responds to presence, not pressure. 

So, go ahead and press play. May the lyrics remind you that stone can turn to skin again — and that something that’s been asleep in you might just be starting to wake (again). “What was closed and unresponsive, now is softened, now alive.”

This song expresses the inner transformation God brings, where what was once resistant becomes alive and responsive through His love. It captures a quiet renewal that happens within, not by striving but by His Spirit reshaping the heart.
