Can your own strength really wash away shame?
Pride has a cost. In the song “Trust in Him”, John Long lays out that price in this warm, folk-driven track, tracing a familiar road: chasing your own desires, putting your name above everything else, then watching the fires catch up. He sings, “I knew I couldn’t outrun all the fires that came from putting pride on my name.” Most of us know that road because we’ve already walked it.
But John doesn’t stay there long. The lyrics turn. “Hell started laughin’,” John sings, “but it turned to fear when the stone rolled away.” That’s the pivot point in this song. Death didn’t win. And because it didn’t, your past also doesn’t have to win. You’ve got a way forward!
Proverbs 3:5–6 says: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” This isn’t about partial trust. It isn’t trust with a backup plan. It’s trust with all your heart.
How can you apply this today? Take a leap of faith and bring your actual mess to Him instead of trying to manage it yourself. Stop negotiating with guilt. Stop trying to earn a clean slate when He has already handed you one. He’s not waiting for you to fix yourself first — He’s holding out His hand right now. His hand is well within your reach… grab it!
Go ahead and give this song a listen. Let the lyrics silence the noise and remind you that you don’t need to stay stuck in what you’ve already been forgiven for. “Just trust in Him today.”
