"Chasing Nothing" by Louis Loock: When Grace Starts Chasing You


Success fades. Approval fades. What actually lasts?

Picture yourself walking home. A normal walk home, nothing dramatic. Just sidewalks, tomorrow’s to-do list, and thinking about what you own and the career/life you have. That’s where “Chasing Nothing” by Louis Loock starts. He continues to reflect: “Emptiness surrounds me, for no reason that I see, // People walkin’ past, time goes by so fast.”

He wasn’t chasing something that turned out disappointing — he was chasing something that turned out to be empty. An illusion. A finish line that keeps moving further away. Does this sound familiar? 

Scripture named this pattern centuries before playlists even existed. Ecclesiastes 2:11 puts it kind of bluntly: “Then I considered all that my hands had done and the toil I had expended in doing it, and behold, all was vanity and a striving after wind.” A striving after wind. You can’t catch wind. You can’t hold it. If you chase applause, achievement, or approval long enough, you’ll end up with the same thing — hands full of … air. 

Okay… Is that it then? If you listen closely to the lyrics, you’ll hear good news… The chase can be reversed! “I’m thankful for Your love now chases me like mad.” Stop running after things that fade. Let Grace catch up to you instead. Sit down today. Get honest and real about what you’ve been grasping for. Bring it all to God in prayer, the same way that Louis and so many others have done before. God is waiting to hear you… Are you ready to call Home?

Background:

The song has heartfelt and uplifting lyrics - for it explores the emptiness of chasing success, possessions, approval by others, but rather, that true happiness and lasting hope are found in Christ alone. Ironic that as I'm typing here - I'm looking for approval of some sorts - but hey, the song will hopefully plant a seed to encourage all to let go of what fades, and embrace what truly lasts.
