"Great Lord" by Sarah Emerson: When Mountains Teach You to Worship


Can mountains make you want to worship?

Sarah Emerson wrote “Great Lord” while on a trip up in Leavenworth, Washington, surrounded by beautiful mountains. She was craving a song that she could shout from the rooftops about how great God is! That’s where this song was born — not in a studio, but looking up to something that is too big to ignore.

Sarah Emerson - Great LordThe lyrics open with an acknowledgement: “Great is the name of the Lord, powerful is His hand.” No qualifiers. No hedging. Just stating a fact. Then the song widens its lens. “Let every mountain, every valley, speak of all Your majesty.” Suddenly it’s not just Sarah praising His majesty — it’s all of creation praising Him, “You are Great, Lord.”

Reflect for a moment on your own life. Where do you feel small? Where do circumstances seem too tangled to fix? The song addresses that tension, “Nothing’s impossible, You’re making all things new… Is there anything You can’t do?”

In Isaiah 55:12 we read, “the mountains and the hills before you shall break forth into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.” Creation doesn’t need permission to praise. It just responds to what’s true.

You don’t need to be surrounded by mountains to be reminded of God’s greatness. His greatness is all around you. What we all need are moments of honesty about what feels impossible right now in our lives — and a willingness to hand it over to God. Tell Him, say it out loud. Don’t put this off until tomorrow. Let your circumstances become the valley that speaks up, not the voice that stays silent.

Give “Great Lord” a listen. May it remind you that His greatness isn’t a mood — it’s a fact you get to declare. He makes all things new, and there is nothing He can’t do. “You are Great, Lord.”

"Ebenezer" by David Dowdell: Faithful Before, Faithful Now, Faithful Forever

"No One Like You Jesus" by Morgan Starner: Why Only Jesus Can Carry Your Burdens
