“I’m Not My Yesterday” by Howard Gripp is about walking away from a version of himself that he wasn’t proud of. He admits that he lived some lies and played some games, thinking that he was in control the whole time. Then God interrupted him. “… You called me out and broke my chains,” he sings, and that line captures the key message of the song. Howard shares: “We all have things we’re not proud of, but they don’t have to define us.” Those chains don’t loosen themselves on their own. Someone besides us has to break them, and He is closer than we often realize while we’re bound. 

The chorus emphasizes what God does: “Grace has washed my past away.” Not covered. Not managed. Washed away! Howard’s hope for each of us is simple — no matter where we’ve been, we can still change. That’s not wishful thinking. That’s the gospel, that’s the new creation God promises each of us. 

Read what Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 5:17: “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” The old has passed. Not faded. Not improved. Passed away, replaced entirely. It no longer defines us. 

Maybe you’re still carrying your past around as if it’s evidence against you. Once a thief — always a thief, once a liar …, once a cheat …, once a poor student …, once … once … once… Stop rehearsing it. Your failures don’t get to write today’s chapter, because His Grace has already claimed the pen. Ask yourself what you would do differently when you actually accept that the ‘old you’ is gone. Then go and do that thing. 

Change doesn’t happen because you finally found enough willpower to break the cycle. It happens because God pulled you up and changed your ways. Let that truth move your feet today. 

May the lyrics of this song move you to action, asking God to change you and help you to surrender to His total makeover. A makeover that will change you from the inside out and make your past obsolete. May the chorus also become your own declaration. “I’m not my yesterday with You.”

Background:

"I'm Not My Yesterday" is about leaving my past behind and becoming the person I was created to be. We all have things we're not proud of, but they don't have to define us. The line, "I'm not my yesterday, grace has washed my past away," really says it all. My hope is that this song reminds people that no matter where they've been, they can still change.
