"Rich Toward You" by Gresha Schuilling: The Security Money Can't Give

Your heart follows whatever you treasure most.

Picture a man who built bigger barns just to hold more of what he already had. Jesus told the story about a rich fool who told his own soul to “take it easy, eat, drink, and be merry” — only to lose everything he had that very night. Gresha Schuilling’s song “Rich Toward You” picks up right where that parable leaves off. The opening verse asks the same hard question that the fool had never considered: “What are all these things I’ve gathered // If they’re not laid down for You?”

Gresha answers that: “I won’t set my hope on riches // They can never make me sure.” Real security comes from a completely different source.

The apostle Paul wrote to Timothy about this sense of security. He instructed the wealthy “not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy” (1 Timothy 6:17, ESV). Notice how God is described here — not a distant judge, but a generous provider. Your bank account will fluctuate. His character never does.

So what does trusting Him look like today? Start small. Give something away before you feel ready to. Loosen your grip on one thing you’ve been clutching too tightly. Ask yourself honestly if this possession serves God’s purposes, or has it quietly become your treasure? Generosity isn’t a spiritual bonus round — it’s the natural overflow of a heart anchored somewhere that is really secure.

Listen to this song while you consider what you’re truly holding onto. Let the bridge of the song become your own prayer: “Take my heart, take my riches // Everything is Yours.”

Background:

Jesus teaches that life does not consist in the abundance of possessions. The rich fool stored up everything for himself but was not rich toward God. The New Testament response is not poverty, but a different relationship with wealth: our hope rests in God, who provides for us; what we have becomes an opportunity for good works and generosity; and our hearts are set on treasure that lasts.
