"Stand By Me" by Daniel Aranda: Finding Steadiness in Life's Storms

“Stand By Me” by Daniel Aranda is an amazing rendition of a hymn written by Charles Albert Tindley in 1905. Tindley was the son of a former slave, a man who knew what it meant to need help that wasn’t guaranteed. He didn’t write from comfort. He wrote from the middle of a fight, and that’s exactly why the song is still so relevant and cherished by many today. Daniel Aranda’s recording brings gospel legends Terry Blackwood and Charlie McCoy into that same lineage, carrying Tindley’s plea forward into a new generation. 

Daniel Aranda - Stand By MeThe lyrics move through life’s troubles, one verse at a time. “When the storms of life are raging, stand by me” — that’s not poetic exaggeration. Tindley’s first verse is about a ship tossed on open water, powerless against the waves. Then verses about failing strength, friends who misunderstand your best efforts, persecution, and the song ends with a verse about old age creeping toward “chilly Jordan.” Each of the verses names a different way that life can knock you down, and each verse ends the same way: a request for God’s presence, not rescue. 

That request for His presence echoes an old promise found in Isaiah 43:2, “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you.” God doesn’t promise to remove the storm. He promises to stay with you in the storm. 

Think about how that assurance can change your life today. You stop waiting for pain to disappear before you can feel steady. Stability comes from Who’s beside you, not from circumstances finally cooperating. Bring your unfinished mess to God today. Stop performing strength that you don’t have, and ask for His presence instead of a fix. Our God specializes in staying! 

Give this beautiful rendition of the song a listen, and may the honesty in this song become your own prayer. “Thou who rulest the wind and water, stand by me.”

"Come Alive" by Joel Lane: Finding Life Where Emptiness Used to Live

God’s mercies are new every morning — do you notice? “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” by Gethsemane Instrumental is one of the tracks in John Long’s upcoming instrumental project.
