"Crayons" by Jae Jin: Why God Treasures Your Scribbles

What if your scribbles matter more than masterpieces?

Picture a Crayola box holding 8.3 million crayons. Jae Jin does, and he sees us in that picture: every shade different, every one needed, every line counts. Years of making art taught him something surprising: “the expert brushstrokes of Picasso may not necessarily move someone more than the stream-of-consciousness scribbles of crayons done by a 5-year-old.”

So why do so many people stop drawing?

Jae Jin - Crayons“Crayons” by Jae Jin opens with someone “settling a score with the world” using “a fistful of crayons, instead of a sword.” Then comes the hard part: “the moment I sense that they see me is the moment I run out the door.” Is that urge familiar? Being seen can feel pretty risky, so you hide the colors you were given.

Notice how something small can trigger something big… “The moment I chose to see You was the moment I was moving ahead.” Read that again… who changes first? Not the world. The artist, once he looks up at God. The same applies to you and me. We change when we choose to see God.

Jesus says the same thing in Matthew 18:3: “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” Children don’t audition for love. They run to it, wide-eyed and sticky-fingered, knowing for sure that they belong.

Jae’s song emphasizes that even when your canvas feels cracked or gray, “the broken ones [crayons] still color the same.”

Try this today: pick one ordinary moment and meet it with wonder. Watch the light on your kitchen wall. Thank God out loud for it. Skip trying to color-by-numbers to grow your faith and let your colors stray.

Give “Crayons” a listen and let the chorus sink in. Hear it, then sing it. “The things that I couldn’t see but had in my heart. They were lost, but now I’m found”

(Related scripture: Matthew 18:3; Luke 15:24; Psalm 139:14)

Background:

We're all very much like crayons in a gigantic box (Can you imagine seeing a Crayola box of 8.3 million crayons?). As I grow older as an artist, I've come to realize that the expert brushstrokes of Picasso may not necessarily move someone more than the stream-of-consciousness scribbles of crayons done by a 5-year-old. I think what the world needs more than ever is for each of us to find a way, despite how difficult the world makes it, to return to having a childlike faith. To just be a kid in every moment… to be filled with wonder and excitement as we were when we were young.

"Whoop The Devil" by Destin Dumais: Standing in Christ's Authority

Who gave you the authority to stand firm? Destin Dumais opens his debut single with an amazing sound that excites, gets you up on your feet, and gets you ready to conquer. “Whoop The Devil” is a hard-hitting country-rock song with one clear message: As believers, we hold real authority in Christ! The song starts with a cowboy scene. “Gonna saddle up and ride, ain’t no place you can hide.” Then comes the line that makes an important difference: “Been deputized, authorized.” Nobody appoints himself to this work. The badge was handed over at Calvary. Jesus said it plainly in Luke 10:19: “Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you.” Who gives the authority? Jesus does! This kind of confidence never relies on your strength, your mood, or your track record. This confidence rests on His name, and His name only! Does that now mean that our fears will disappear for good? Not always. Destin admits that...

"Faith Like Daniel" by Marlee Smith: Praising God When the World Says No

Who do you trust when everyone disagrees? What do you do when the world says that your God doesn’t matter? Marlee Smith’s energetic pop-rock song, “Faith Like Daniel,” comes with an all-teenage female band behind her, and her response to what the world says is anything but timid. When the world feels overturned, she’ll keep “praising my Father,” even when the world says she shouldn’t. Remember what we read in the Bible about Daniel? Daniel knew that pressure. A royal decree banned prayer to anyone but the king for a period of thirty days. Daniel heard the news, went home, opened his windows, and prayed as he always had. No speeches. No protest. Just steady faith, three times a day. Then came the lions, and what happened that night in the den became a testimony. Scripture says, “No kind of harm was found on him, because he had trusted in his God” (Daniel 6:23). Daniel never trusted that his circumstances would be easy. He trusted the One who stood over them. Marlee’s message carries t...

"I’ll Rejoice" by David Dowdell: Finding Joy in God When Plans Fail

Can you praise God when nothing goes right? Empty vines. Failed crops. A barn with no animals. David Dowdell opens his song, “I’ll Rejoice”, with a list of losses that is so complete that it feels as if “there is nothing left at all.” David took his inspiration from the book of Habakkuk and wrote a defiant anthem of praise for anyone whose plans have fallen apart (… we’ve all had that happen to us, one way or another…). The song also asks the question most of us try to avoid: “What if I never get to live the life I wanted?” Will you still trust God when all you have left is “a tired and broken heart” ? Be honest with yourself. Just about everyone has a ready answer for the sunny days, but hardly an answer for the dark ones. Habakkuk didn’t pretend. He saw disaster coming and said so. Still he wrote: “Yet I will rejoice in the LORD; I will take joy in the God of my salvation.” (Habakkuk 3:18, ESV) Notice how this verse starts with the word “yet.” His joy didn’t wait for circumstance...
